Mission to Israel 2010

Raising spirits, fostering hope and building bridges... through the power of song

The On Wings of Song Mission to Israel in December was the highlight for the choir this year. During the Mission the choir performed free concerts for charitable organizations including Beit Halochem and special needs children's and seniors' groups. The choir worked together with the Ethiopian community in Bat Yam in a special musical Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) project as well as collaborated with Israeli youth choirs throughout the country. Through these performances choristers reinforced their commitment to the land, established social connections with their Israeli peers, fortified their love of Jewish music, culture and heritage and developed leadership skills for future community involvement. The Renanim Youth Singers would like to thank all its generous patrons who ensured our ability to go on this highly successful mission to Israel.

Learning and Growing and Singing

Choristers develop a passion for creating music as they learn repertoire, proper vocalization techniques, music vernacular, musical literacy and expression. Through the rigorous demands of practice and rehearsal, choristers develop personal discipline, maturity and focus in other aspects of life. Although scientific studies (McMaster University) have conclusively proven music's ability to enhance the intellect, improving math and English scores, the goals of The Renanim Youth Singers are much loftier.

As the connective channel between emotional and intellectual communication, the choir teaches individuals how to listen while simultaneously interacting in musical dialogue. Public performance builds confidence even as one is humbled by the depth and beauty of the repertoire. Singing builds leadership skills, as it insists on blend and sensitivity for the benefit of the whole. The choir demands discipline and hard work, yet it is a lot of fun as it develops artistry and creativity. In addition, emotional engagement of the music helps bring out the best in people, encouraging life long bonds of friendship and the importance of community service.

Choristers take pride in belonging to The Renanim Youth Singers as they musically tap into their inner soul, (neshama) developing a positive sense of Jewish identity and culture. Indeed, the joy of performing in a Judaic choral ensemble is considered by many to be an emotional bridge to Jewish continuity. Anecdotal evidence suggests there is a connection between the artistic demands of self betterment and the desire to channel that positive spirit (ruach) into making this world a better place (Tikkun Olam).

Kabbalat Shabbat at the Kotel

We sang a Kabbalat Shabbat Service at the Southern Gate of the Kotel for all Canadian Birthright participants – many of whom had had little to no connection to Judaism other than this trip. Sitting on 2000 years old steps. the participants listened, sang and swayed to the music of the choir as a white dove flew overhead. Situated at the Davidson Center, the archway where pilgrims went through to get to the Second Temple, the site overlooked the magical, golden hewed Mount of Olives just before sunset. Still, it was the singing of L’Dor VaDor, from Generation to Generation, that elevated the intensely spiritual experience for all.
